Piet Mondrian's art—created with the three primary colors and straight lines—is among the most easily recognized in the world, as familiar as the Mona Lisa. His work has been adapted into architecture, graphic design, bus benches, clothing, sneakers and food. Though his work may appear simple, the man was not. A spiritualist, a philosopher and a dedicated jazz dancer, Mondrian moved from Impressionist depictions of his native Holland to some of the earliest forays into abstraction before finding, in his Neoplastic style, a way to express universal values through aesthetic expression.
